Hi, I’m Matt.

(he/him/his)

I provide online counseling services for clients 15 and older throughout the state of Washington. I also grow carrots.

About me

My experience in the field of mental health is wide-ranging, but it began with seeing my own therapist and learning to accept myself as I am. I know that starting therapy is not without risk, but I’ve also learned that the rewards can be many, and I know that you have a right to flourish.

I work well with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, panic, burnout, self-doubt, and PTSD. I also love working with adolescent boys and young men, LGBTQIA+ clients, neurodivergent adults, creatives, grad student/early-career therapists, and folks who experience oppression in their professional and academic institutions.

I commonly draw from Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, EMDR, Narrative Therapy, Schema Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) in my work, though my approach is flexible and can be adapted to suit your goals and needs. My most sincere hopes for our work together are that you trust yourself more, feel greater personal empowerment, discharge unhelpful stories about yourself, and move closer to who and what is most important to you.

Beyond being a therapist, I'm a writer, skier, gardener, shower singer, basketball fan, dog dad, and perfectly average pizza chef. I'm engaged in anti-racist action and facilitation work as well as local food justice initiatives.

Collaborative

You should have power when it comes to determining the experience you have in therapy. I’ll make sure we’re doing the work you want to do towards the goals you set for yourself.

My Approach

Human

I’m definitely not perfect, so I don’t expect you to be, either. I welcome all of your humanness (laughter, tears, messiness, apprehension, and swears) as we discover what is most true to you and dispose of the stories about yourself that no longer serve you.

Trauma-informed

I’m much more interested in what has happened to you than what is “wrong” with you. I have training in several different trauma-specific counseling approaches (including EMDR), but I will allow you to explore and approach your challenging experiences at a pace that feels congruent with you.

Frequently Asked

  • If you’re interested in beginning therapy, you can schedule an intake appointment here. You can also email me (mattraymondlmhc@gmail.com) if you’re interested in a free fifteen-minute consultation. Once you’re scheduled and you’ve completed some paperwork on your patient portal, we’ll have our first session, which will be spent establishing our connection, discussing current issues, and identifying your hopes.

I partner with Headway for billing and scheduling purposes.

  • This depends on your insurance (see the insurers I accept below), and you can call the number on your insurance card to find out for sure. My self-pay rate is $150 per session, and I can provide a superbill for you to seek reimbursement through your plan’s out-of-network benefits.

  • I do—I’m currently in network with Aetna, Cigna, Quest Behavioral Health, Ambetter, Premera, and Regence. If I do not take your insurance, I can provide a superbill for you so that you can use your out-of-network benefits.

  • A lot of that is up to you! I can offer techniques to manage difficult emotions and unwelcome thoughts, I can help you process traumatic experiences, I can help you understand your values and identify the values-based actions you want to take and, above all, I can listen to your story. We’ll move at a pace that works for you.

Privilege, Identity, and Therapy

If you’ve gotten this far, you’ve probably gathered that I, like most of the people credited with founding “psychology”, am a White man. Throughout my career, I’ve worked with clients whose cultural experiences and identities differ widely from mine, and I remain committed to living with humility, curiosity, and an anti-oppressive lens both in and beyond my career. I eagerly welcome conversations about power, privilege, identity, and ruptures in our sessions. All this said, if you feel that I cannot understand your perspectives, I will happily support you in finding a provider whose lived experience may parallel yours more closely—your sense of safety in therapy is paramount to me.
